Super Typhoon Fung-wong Strikes the Philippines: Two Fatalities and Massive Displacement Reported

The island nation was severely impacted by Super Typhoon Fung-wong, which left a minimum of two fatalities and displaced more than 1.4 million individuals.

Authorities reported that the powerful weather system caused widespread sudden floods, coastal inundation, mudslides, and fierce high-velocity gusts, leading to the evacuation of 1.4 million residents across the country.

Extensive Damage and Emergency Operations

In the town of Pandan, a severely affected area, emergency crews documented rising waters reaching rooftop levels and residences washed out by the powerful currents.

“Our personnel rescued 14 individuals stranded on the roof surrounded by water in a low-lying neighbourhood,” an emergency official explained. One resident also called in panic, reporting his home’s roof was about to be ripped off due to the storm. We rescued him along with four family members.”

As of Monday morning, authorities confirmed two fatalities: a drowning victim in Catanduanes and another who died after her home gave way in eastern Samar.

Typhoon Strength and Projected Path

The super typhoon weakened to a typhoon on Monday morning as it crossed the main island, where the capital is located.

Per meteorological authorities, its maximum winds decreased from 115 mph to 102 mph, but gusts were still reaching more than 275 km/h.

The storm system is expected to lose strength as it moves in the direction of Taiwan.

Response and Recovery

The national disaster response service indicated efforts were ongoing to evaluate destruction to infrastructure and homes.

Approximately 6,000 evacuation centres were activated to accommodate 92,000 families.

Recent Context and Environmental Factors

The typhoon hit shortly following another severe storm, that claimed at least 224 people and left another 135 missing before moving on toward Vietnam, where it killed five.

Searches for the missing persons were halted on Sunday over risks to emergency personnel.

The climate crisis is causing cyclones stronger and common. Fung-wong is the twenty-first storm to hit the Philippines this year.

Scientists report that the frequency of super-typhoons hitting the Philippines has increased doubled over the last two decades.

International estimates indicate that intense storms result in an average of US$3.5 million in losses to the country annually.

The Philippine president declared an emergency declaration last week due to the extensive devastation caused by Kalmaegi and anticipated impacts from Fung-wong.
